Fundraiser(s) needed for Sun24. Sun24 donates solar lights to Catholic parishes in Africa. The parish priests distribute the solar lights to the poorest of poor in their parishes, Catholics and non-Catholics.
1.3 billion people live without electricity, half in sub-Saharan Africa. Most use kerosene lamps.
Each $4 solar light replaces a filthy kerosene lamp that emits toxic soot, is an enormous fire danger, is expensive (for fuel), poisons children and GREATLY contributes to climate change. At $2.22 per tonne of CO2e mitigated, this is one of the most cost effective climate mitigation projects.
The founder alone has been funding the development of this model. Now the the model has been very successfully developed (37,000 solar lights), the project must be greatly expanded.
Sun 24 Impact To-Date:
Solar lights distributed (10/16): 37,000
People benefiting: 162,800
Tonnes of emissions averted (CO 2 equivalent): 66,600
Averted miles driven by a typical American car (equivalent): 157,250,000
Dollars saved by poor African families (cost of kerosene): 6,216,000
People experiencing better health (lungs and eyes): 677,700
Extra hours of study time: 19,240,000
