Hospice of the Valley cares for most of our patients in their homes or place of residence. When the needs of the patient and family can be better met in an inpatient setting, the patient can stay for a short period in one of our palliative care units (PCU). Often, patients’ loved ones spend several days at the PCU, neglecting care for themselves as they are caring for a loved one. Volunteers are needed to donate ingredients and cook a meal or dessert of the volunteer’s choosing on a weekly or bi-weekly basis at one of four PCU locations, Gilbert, Glendale, Phoenix or Surprise. A home-made meal or dessert is incredibly comforting and sustaining to our patients’ loved ones. Recipes can be simple; by no means must a volunteer be a chef to participate. All skill levels are welcome. This has been one of the most impactful volunteer projects we have offered. Under 18 years of age are welcomed with supervising adult.

Mission Statement
Bringing Comfort and Dignity as Life Nears its End.
Description
Hospice of the Valley's mission focuses on caring. Hospice care treats the whole person, as well as nurturing the family. When a loved one has a life-limiting illness, the extended family also needs support. A team of professionals helps the patient stay pain-free, comfortable and fully engaged.
As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to serve our patients, their families and our agency in a variety of ways. The greatest volunteer need is to serve our patients in their homes or in one of our many inpatient units. Patient care volunteers provide in-home respite care ensuring that the patient is not alone while the caregiver takes a much needed break.. Volunteers also provide socialization, transportation and supportive assistance like running errands. Other opportunities for service include pet therapy, administrative support, thrift store associates, special events, fundraising and Ryan House pediatrics. Please visit www.hov.org and follow the volunteer tab to apply and see all of our opportunities.
Our volunteer training course is offered several times a year. The success of the volunteer program is dependent upon your ongoing commitment to our patients and the agency.
