Mission Statement

Briinging hope and healing to North Texas Foster Children

Description

Friends of Wednesday’s Child (formerly Wednesday’s Child Benefit Corporation) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1984 when volunteers recognized the overwhelming needs of foster children all over the region. Today, we are the only non-profit organization whose single purpose is to meet the unique needs of North Texas foster children.

An old nursery rhyme says, "Wednesday’s child is full of woe." Today, the term "Wednesday’s Child" is associated with abused and neglected children in foster care. As a result, a number of independent programs across the country who work with foster children use the name "Wednesday’s Child." However, we receive no funding from the "Wednesday's Child" program sponsored by a local television station or any other similarly named program. We receive no government or United Way funds. Friends of Wednesday’s Child operates on funds raised from events, individual contributions, corporations, civic and religious groups, and foundations.

The Friends of Wednesday’s Child mission is to bring hope and healing to children in foster care so they can overcome pasts of abuse and neglect and claim futures as confident, independent members of the community. We meet foster children’s educational, clothing and nurturance needs, striving to pool resources to close the gap between what the state and foster parents can provide and what each child needs in order to experience predictability and nurturance, develop self-value, and reach his or her full potential as a self-sufficient, healthy adult.

Friends of Wednesday’s Child works closely with and leverages the efforts of a number of community agencies, including Child Protective Services (CPS) and their Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) program, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), foster family associations and private foster placement agencies, community organizations like the Garland YMCA, retailers, corporate volunteer programs and area tutors.
