Typically a 5 hour commitment, hours vary between 9:00am - 3:30pm.
Take Me to the River is an educational program that takes place at Hidden Falls Regional Park in St. Paul. Fourth graders rotate between different stations led by National Park Service Rangers.
Students learn to use a compass to find hidden geo-caches that engage the students in a discussion about the river ecosystem and Dakota history. Another station involves students in shelter building in the Mississippi River flood plain forest after learning about historic structures used by river travelers. Students learn the value of fire in an ecosystem while building very small fires around a campfire circle. The fire station is paired with a geology or bird hike. Sound fun? It is!
Volunteers are needed to help engage students in the activity and help with set up, take-down, and transitions between stations. This opportunity requires quite a bit of walking and student engagement. The time with students is about 3.5 hours which includes a 20 min lunch break. We need 4-8 volunteers each day.
