The Somerville Boys & Girls Club is in need of adult volunteers to provide individualized homework help and tutoring to youth during our daily "Power Hour" programming block. We are looking for volunteers to commit to as little as 1.5 hours, one time per week during Power Hour (3:00-4:00 pm, Monday-Thursday) to help ensure that every child gets the individual help they need with their homework. We are also looking for people to read with youth and tutor some of our middle school students with specific subjects (writing, ELA, math, or science).
The Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Somerville serves 100 students aged 6-14 at Healey Elementary School through its after-school programming. We provide opportunities for academic support as well as dynamic programming in many different program areas, including the arts, sports, social recreation, leadership, community service, and health and wellness. Our Clubs aim to ensure safe spaces where youth can grow and thrive while surrounded and supported by caring adult role models.
Over 75% of Club members are from low-income families. With annual membership dues of only $30, for approximately the same cost that a child can spend one day in other local after school programs, the Club welcomes a child for an entire school year. Because we do not charge the cost of our services, our resources and budget are limited. We rely greatly on the support of volunteers to ensure that we have enough adults in our Club each day to support youth members and ensure positive, safe, quality programming.
