About

Purpose: Our Education Program Volunteers assist with many aspects of our in-school and after school music programs. Opportunities generally take place at our partner school sites and/or concert/event venues.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) partners with inner-city schools to provide music as a core subject for all children. We utilize music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school and self-confidence.

Location: You will most likely be placed at one of a 25 partner schools throughout Los Angeles County. We work with you to find a school close to where you are located.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting teacher(s) in the classroom
  • Assisting in instruction (technique, instrument positioning, sight-reading, etc.)
  • Possible in-class accompaniment (if you play the piano or guitar)
  • Assisting with survey distribution at winter and spring school concerts

Reports to Volunteer Coordinator at Education Through Music-Los Angeles

The Length of Appointment: Ongoing basis

Time Commitment: At least 1-2 hours once a week (Mon-Fridays between 8am-3:30pm) during the school year.

Qualifications: A passion for music and music education. Pleasant manner, patience, problem-solving ability, dependability. Prior experience working with children is a plus.

Support: Initial teacher introduction and classroom observation before starting as a volunteer.

Age Requirement: 16 yrs. old and up

Dress Code: Business Casual

Development opportunities: Can advance to become a program music teacher intern and/or teacher. This is also a perfect opportunity to gain experience in the classroom if you are interested in teaching yourself.
