OUR MISSION - AMIkids is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth develop into responsible and productive citizens. AMIkids' mission is to protect public safety and positively impact as many youth as possible through the efforts of a diverse and innovative staff. AMIkids works in partnership with youth agencies, local communities and families.


Title: Volunteer Mentor

A Mentor is a caring, responsible, adult volunteer who serves as a trusted friend and guide to a returning citizen. S/he helps to ensure that the mentee develops important life skills, is exposed to new opportunities and a wide array of resources, makes positive life choices, and stays focused.

The Mentor’s Responsibility to Mentee

Every mentor must:

  • Be able to commit to spending at least one year in a relationship with a returnee..
  • Spend a minimum of one to two (1-2) hours a month engaged in a mutually agreed-upon activity with their mentee.
  • Communicate with their mentee monthly-by telephone or email-to keep in touch about what is going on in their lives.
  • Honor, all commitments made to the mentee.
  • Be respectful of the mentees time, opinions, and decision-making.
  • Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors-e.g., patience, tolerance, and reflective listening.
  • Be encouraging and supportive of the mentee.

Responsibility to the Mentoring Organization

Every Mentor must:

  • Check-in with the Career Coordinator and Executive Director monthly.
  • Attend on-going trainings when needed or requested to do so by program staff.
  • Complete evaluation surveys as requested by staff.
  • Recognize role as a mandated reporter and report any problematic issues.
  • Be patient and understand the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time.

Qualifications

All volunteers must:

  • Be 21years of age.
  • Have earned a high school diploma.
  • Submit an application and a copy of a photo ID.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete an interview for a volunteer mentor position by a staff member.
  • Exhibit a genuine concern for at-risk youth.
  • Participate and attend training and periodic mentor support workshops as required.
