Dog walkers are responsible for walking each adoption dog for their afternoon exercise and pre-bedtime potty break. The time volunteers spend walking each dog varies depending on how full the kennels are (5-20 minutes per dog). New protocol states that NO dogs are to be walked near the front entrance of the shelter or near Highway 49. Plastic bags should be used to clean up after each dog. Dog walkers may also choose to patrol the walk area with a scooper after all walks are completed instead of using individual bags. Dog walkers should alert shelter staff of any abnormal feces, blood or cuts on the dog, or abnormal behavior, such as shaking head/ears, limping, trouble urinating, etc. **Red level dog walkers can walk rabies-vaccinated and behavioral-assessed rescue dogs.

Mission Statement

Staff at the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter are committed to working with local partners to find temporary and permanent homes for adoptable animals housed at the facility. To determine if an animal is adoptable, shelter staff must rule out any underlying conditions and/or temperaments that present safety risks to the community. Euthanasia is a last resort. When necessary, euthanasia is carried out with respect to the animals by a licensed veterinarian, following best-practice guidelines for direct injection set by the NC Department of Agriculture. It is important to Cabarrus County that all animals at the shelter receive care and compassion.
