The Home Orchard Society's ALL ABOUT FRUIT SHOW is Saturday and Sunday, Oct 15-16 from 10-4 at the Clackamas County Fairplex in Canby, Oregon. As always, this will be a well attended and lively event.

Our talented and generous volunteers pitch in and help run the tables at each event, a real group effort. These events fulfill our mission of encouraging people to grow fruit at home. if you'd enjoy helping with this event, we've got volunteer slots open that need filling.

FRIDAY SETUP -- from 10:30am-2:30pm or whenever we're done. Many hands make light work and last year we were all done at 2pm. Let me know if you can make it and we’ll put you to work. This is totally fun with lots of tasks being done by the kind of people you'd like to hang around with -- nimble-thinking, problem-solving, giggle-filled, helpful folks who love fruit.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY -- Volunteers on Saturday and Sunday help out from 9:30 to 1 or from 1 to 4:30. Here's where we can use you:

1. Admission -- Can you smile and make change? Can you handle the onslaught that comes for the first few hours. Are you a quick thinker with a sense of humor who can tell attendees where to go and what to do? We need 3 people each morning and another 3 in the afternoon.

2. Membership -- Help Stan tout the benefits and joys of being a HOS member. Smile! Two people in the morning, two in the afternoon.

3. Raffle -- Hand each person a ticket when they come in and ask them to write their name on it and put it in the bucket for the drawings in the hope Bob will announce that they’ve won a nifty prize. This is how we keep a head count for the event. We draw for prizes through the day and that's got to be fun, right? Are you exuberant? We need two in the morning and two in the afternoon.

4. Books -- Surround yourself with fascinating books and make recommendations. Work with Sherry who can fill you in. Be good at making change. Need 2 in the morning, 2 folks in the afternoon.

5. Tasting -- Cut slices for people to taste from our bounty of apples, pears, grapes and exotics. This position is big-time fun -- everyone enjoys eating fresh fruit, especially flavors they’ve never imagined before. If you have a favorite paring knife, bring it. Bring an apron (if you have one). And did I mention fun?

  • APPLES -- TEN volunteers for each shift
  • PEARS -- SIX volunteers each shift
  • UNUSUAL FRUIT -- TWO volunteers each shift

6. Sell Arboretum Fruit with Tonia -- doesn't that sound like a good way to spend your day? Need one for each shift.

Reply to me directly and let me know the day and what shifts you’d like to take for which task. We DEEPLY APPRECIATE all of you who help out. The best reward each year is how many new people get excited about the bounty of fruit that can be grown in our area and start planting their own.

Any of these positions sound like fun to you? If so, please let me know -- EMAIL ME (so I have everyone's requests all in one place). Tell me
1) Your name
2) What table you want to help out at
3) Which shift

Mission Statement

PFTP's mission is to increase equitable access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce. We envision joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well-being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate.

Description

Portland Fruit Tree Project is a grassroots organization that provides a community-based solution to a critical and growing need in Portland and beyond: access to healthy food and the benefits provided by trees including cleaner air, shade, and food. By empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of urban fruit trees, we are preventing waste, building community knowledge and resources, and creating sustainable ways to obtain healthy, locally-grown food.

We believe that fruit trees can be powerful tools to build a better Portland Metro area, and that our programming can be replicated in other regions.
