The Serendipity Reading Program, started by our long-time Board Member, Mike Conboy, is based on the nationally recognized concept that the secret of learning to read is lots of easy, interesting reading material in the home. The goal of the Serendipity Reading Program is to improve the reading capabilities of children from under-resourced Washtenaw County families, leading to academic and eventually economic success, by providing free weekly book giveaways.
The Serendipity Reading Program takes place once a week at various Community Action Network sites including Hikone, Green Baxter Court, and Bryant community centers, as well as Mitchell and Brick elementary schools for summer camp and after school programs. These CAN sites and the programs they offer are important institutions for the growth of children who frequent them through their early, informative, elementary and middle school years. They provide low cost, educational resources and programs in existing facilities with constant staff support.
A Serendipity Reading Volunteer would:
Pick up free books donated to Kiwanis and the Ann Arbor District Library,
Sort through the books and store them in boxes to prepare for Step 3, and
Deliver and distribute the books to students at each CAN location.
This volunteer would need reliable transportation and be able to commit to this position long-term.
In the past, our former distributor collected, sorted, and delivered books weekly, but if multiple people are interested in this volunteer opportunity, we could set up a rotating schedule based on each volunteer's availability.
The tasks listed above are the basic expectations for this position, but they are not exhaustive. Should an interested volunteer have suggestions for the program, or a particular skill or passion he or she would like to bring to the program, CAN is flexible and willing to work around each volunteer's background and interests.
