English class

Public schools in Nicaragua only offer children schooling for half a day. This leads to many children without parental care in the afternoon and playing in the streets. This is where La Esperanza steps in. Our learning centers provide a safe, clean, informal environment where children can come and continue their learning in areas such as Math, Art, Spanish, Computing, Reading and English. They are also stocked with resources not often found in the schools such as books, worksheets, art supplies, educational games, computers and tablets.

As a Learning Center Assistant, you will work with local volunteers to support and assist the children as they learn. You will instigate activities and games, rather than running formal lessons. The objective is to create a fun, interactive and positive learning environment outside of the classroom. The children are enthusiastic about learning and excited to meet new people.

This position is available throughout the year and requires a minimum time commitment of two weeks. The longer you’re able to commit to, the more valuable your experience will be. You will work in the afternoon, having your mornings for free time. Volunteers in this role should have at least intermediate level Spanish in order to be able to fully engage with children. If language is a barrier there are numerous Spanish schools in the vicinity.

If you're looking for a more intensive and long term opportunity contact us about internships.

Costs Involved

We ask each volunteer to make an initial contribution of US$50 towards administration costs. All donations go directly towards supporting the learning centers and our other projects, and they’re essential in maintaining our projects. In return you will receive two La Esperanza Granada t-shirts free to wear when you are working with us. There are no additional fees involved with volunteering at La Esperanza Granada, although any fundraising initiatives are welcomed!

Volunteers are responsible for their own living expenses for the duration of their stay. La Esperanza Granada is happy to recommend hostels and arrange homestays for volunteers.

Other Opportunities

Nicaragua is a beautiful country with an endless list of activities for volunteers to enjoy, explore the land of lakes and volcanoes. Granada itself has iconic colonial architecture and there are numerous volcanoes in the vicinity.

La Esperanza Granada can also assist by arranging affordable Spanish classes and bike rentals.

About La Esperanza Granada

Mission Statement

Our mission: By providing opportunities and resources for the long term educational advancement and community development of the Granadino barrios, we hope to brighten the future of the children and empower each community so that they can break the cycle of poverty. At La Esperanza Granada, we believe in giving a hand up, not a handout.

Located in Granada, Nicaragua, La Esperanza Granada is a non-profit organization with a primary focus on creating opportunities for children through education. 'Born’ in 2002, we started in one small village and now provide learning opportunities to more than 2,000 underprivileged children living in the barrios of Granada.

We are a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nondenominational organization, funded by donations of individuals, groups, service groups, schools etc. Donations are used for building new classrooms and schools, contributing to teacher’s salaries, and various things to help improve education and health for the children, such as making copies of exams and worksheets, buying textbooks, dental visits, sports supplies, school repairs and a never ending list of needs in this impoverished country.

The coronavirus crisis has damaged tourism in Nicaragua, reducing our funds and international volunteer numbers. Despite this, La Esperanza has persisted. The staff and the children here are extremely excited to welcome back our international volunteers!

Granada is a beautiful colonial city, on the shore of Lake Cocibolca and surrounded by volcanoes. The beach is never far away. There’s safe and accessible transport service within Granada and connecting it to surrounding areas. While Nicaragua has no official Covid restrictions, citizens generally follow Covid safety protocols
