Founded and built by volunteers, Special Olympics NY is an example of the impact that volunteers can make in their community by putting their time and expertise to use to socially benefit others. We have 2 categories of volunteers for our State Games; our Social Volunteer and a Service Volunteer.

Service Volunteers: The hands-on 'Doer’s’ An individual or group who is willing to commit and dedicate their day to the athletes and willing to do the job needed of them. These jobs can include, but are not limited to: set up, athlete escorts, stagers, timers, scorekeeping and etc. Volunteers must be at least 13years of age; those 13 through 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Service volunteers, please do not bring young children to your assignment.

Social Volunteers: The FANS! An individual or group that would like the volunteer role of our cheering section for our athletes ~ Volunteer to Cheer! This is a very important role, as many athletes travel far and do not always have the opportunity for their families to attend and cheer them on. Fan stations are made available at most events for you to make a sign or banner to add to the fun! Social volunteers can be ANY AGE.

About Special Olympics NY

Location:

94 New Karner Rd, Suite 208, Albany, NY 12203, US

Mission Statement

To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics New York provides inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to discover and unleash the champion within. Our athletes experience the thrill of competing in authentic sports. They overcome defeat, taste victory and stay active for life.

Every competitive athlete, no matter what their abilities, shares certain qualities. Drive. Perseverance. Confidence. For athletes with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics New York provides a training ground where those qualities are refined and given room to grow.

From the Young Athletes program for children ages 2 through 7, to Unified Sports that bring together athletes of all abilities, to credible competitions, Special Olympics New York athletes have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.

Along the way, athletes develop skills that accompany them through every part of life, helping them set an example of what people with intellectual disabilities can really do.
