Intern Role Description

Role: Communications/Social Media Intern

Committee: Communications/Social Media

Reports to: Executive Director



Communications intern corresponds with employees and external stakeholders to keep them informed of company developments. They create strategies to increase employee awareness and promote productivity. Externally, they communicate with the media and other interested parties to announce upcoming events and discuss organizational changes in a way that attempts to maintain a positive image of our organization.

Description of Duties

Internal Communications

  • Oversee the production of communications from draft creation through the distribution of the final product.
  • Develop, review, and enhance content for print, electronic and social media to communicate information to leaders and volunteers.
  • Create and publish monthly newsletters that tie in to our annual theme
  • Create and publish memos with event details and instructions to staff

External Communications

  • Works closely with the Executive Director and other staff to coordinate communications efforts on behalf of the organization to promote the organization’s visibility
  • Create and maintain positive relationships between our private and corporate donors and using media outlets.
  • Prepare and circulate press releases that contain details about upcoming events and broadcast to media outlets.

Social Media

  • Knowledge of all social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Knowledgeable about strategies to increase followers
  • Create campaigns to support annual fundraising events
  • Create and maintain a regular publishing schedule
  • Create and publish relevant, original, high-quality content regularly
  • Adhere to the content publishing calendar to manage content and deliver timely communications

Website Management

  • Write and edit content
  • Monitor and manage content to ensure relevance
  • Upload new content and visuals to ensure they are consistent with the current look and feel
  • Be forward thinking in looking for ways to enhance current features and integrate new
  • Determine technical requirements
  • Solving code problems

Professional Requirements

  • There will be no monetary compensation, this is an internship position
  • Candidate must be committed to serving in this position for one full year
  • Proficiency with the WordPress platform
  • Proficiency in creating and editing documents using Word and Excel and utilizing Yahoo for electronic mail communications
  • Must be able to successfully meet deadlines
  • Have a basic understanding of web design
  • Have a basic understanding of both graphic design and computer programming.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong people skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently

Education Requirements

  • College students or equivalent experience
