VOLUNTEER COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Oakland Youth Aspire (OYA) is a free youth resource center open every Saturday 12:30-5pm in West Oakland. Our mission is to enrich the lives of youth by creating a fun and welcoming environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and fosters open communication, empathy, and the development of interpersonal skills. Our vision is to help youth aspire to live healthy and productive lives, and develop fundamental skills to reach their fullest potential. Below is the description for the volunteer Communications Director board member position. All of our board members are involved in the program and need to co-lead the program at least 1 Saturday per month, and spend 15 hours a month on tasks to fulfill position responsibilities . This position requires candidates to successfully complete an interview with board members and serve in a volunteer capacity at OYA for 5 Saturdays within a 3-month timeframe and complete 1-2 projects prior to membership.

Position Description:

The Oakland Youth Aspire Communications Director will provide leadership in overseeing the organization’s marketing and communications efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and direct the organization’s communications plans and outreach initiatives to support OYA’s goals and ensure content is engaging, consistent and on-message.

  • Insure all print materials are up to date and available for distribution, printing materials as needed.

  • Oversee the organization’s website, updating as needed.

  • Create any special promotional materials for OYA events, fundraising, community outreach needs.

  • Create weekly social media posts to highlight program, events, fundraising campaigns, and other updates. Currently organization is on Facebook and Instagram. Keep Flickr account updated.

  • Collaborate with the Community Partnerships and Outreach Director to support the organization partnerships i.e. volunteer initiatives. This includes preparing any necessary promotional materials.

  • Collaborate with the Development Director on all fundraising efforts, including annual crowdfunding posts, fundraising event support, grant applications, and online campaigns. This includes helping design, write and edit all materials.

  • Conduct outreach to media to obtain press coverage.

  • Develop content as needed to promote organization such as videos, photos slideshows, etc.

  • Help with website update project, all content on current site to new template and CMS system that is easier to update.

  • Commit to 15 hours per month to fulfill position responsibilities including meetings and program attendance:

  • Attend monthly board meetings, weeknight 7pm-9pm

  • Participate in committee meetings as needed

  • Participate in back to school events and holiday events

  • Co-lead program 1x/month from 12pm-5pm

  • Voluntary $300 annual board fees

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Communications or marketing experience preferred

  • Experience working with at-promise youth a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal/presentation communication skills

  • Strong leadership and project management skills; initiative and ability to work independently

  • Fundraising experience a plus

  • Bachelor’s Degree
