Help care for young cottonwood trees! We need groups of 15-50 people to restore habitat along the Mississippi River by weeding and watering plots of cottonwoods. The help of volunteer groups is essential for the survival of this iconic native species.
In 2011, a study by the National Park Service showed that cottonwood trees have not been regenerating in many areas of the Mississippi River's floodplain for decades. This could have many negative impacts, as cottonwoods provide important ecological benefits: they slow erosion, mitigate flooding, and provide key habitat for bald eagles! In an attempt to combat this issue, Mississippi Park Connection and the National Park Service have established plots of young cottonwood trees throughout our park. We need your help to make sure that they survive!
