Seeking guest speakers for ALearn’s Girls Exploring Math (GEM) after-school program targeted to underserved 7th and 8th grade girls in Mountain View and San Jose. Seeking a female speaker (and role model) who can talk about her experience working in STEM - preferably a first-generation woman of color, with whom our girls can relate.

Format: Visit two GEM classrooms at the same school site in one-day, either in Mountain View or San Jose (see below for available dates/times/locations). The speakers will spend one hour in each classroom: 30 minutes sharing their own experience as a woman working in a STEM profession (see guiding questions below), and 30 minutes leading an interactive activity with students on something they do at work. ALearn’s GEM Program Manager, Kelsey Austin-King, will set up a quick phone conversation to help speakers choose a fun, easy-to-implement activity. Speakers will have access to a projector if they would like as they share their own experience.

If interested, speakers can sign up in groups of two or three with a colleague or a friend in a STEM career (with a group of three we may switch to a panel format and shorten the activity afterward).
Length: 2 hours in total: 1 hour with Class #1, 1 hour with Class #2. Please arrive 15 minutes early.

Mission Statement

ALearn's mission is to deliver high-quality math and college readiness programs to low-income, middle school students to prepare them for the "college track" in high school. In short, we aspire to put underserved youth on the path to academic success. Our programs help to close the "achievement gap" of at-risk youth in our area and to encourage them to prepare for high-demand 21st century jobs that provide a path out of poverty.

Description

We are a 501(3)c non-profit in Silicon Valley, helping low-income, underserved student achieve math proficiency and college readiness. Since 2008, we have served close to 8000 students in the neediest schools of the Bay Area. Our summer programs supplement the school year for low-income students who might have otherwise encountered "summer learning loss" not experienced by their higher income peers who are more readily able to attend summer camps. Our after-school programs supplement the school day and give struggling students the one-on-one support from a teacher and aid. Together with schools, community partners and donors, we strive to close the opportunity gap for low-income underserved students in Silicon Valley.
