ORGANIZATION: ASSIST Sheffield

We need people support the work of ASSIST in administration doing a variety of tasks, including arranging appointments, administrating welfare payments and answering enquiries.


Volunteers should be available for one weekday, from Monday-Friday, between the times of 10am and 5pm.


You should have a good level of verbal and written English, and good numeracy skills. You should have experience of using Excel and Word programs. You should be accurate, organised and reliable. You need to be positive about working with diversity and cultural difference. You need to be able to respect confidential information and record information clearly.


Tasks may include

  • Processing expenses and welfare payments

  • Basic financial record keeping

  • Using spreadsheets and databases to keep track of administrative processes

  • Producing letters and fliers on Word equivalent on Google Drive

  • Handling queries: visitors, telephone, emails.

  • Copying, faxing, scanning documents

  • Filing and handling post

  • Purchasing office equipment and supplies

  • Training other volunteers in the administrative tasks

  • Helping maintain the office space

Mission Statement

ASSIST Sheffield is currently the only Sheffield charity focused on destitution among asylum seekers. We help by providing accommodation, advice and other support to those in most need or distress.

Description

ASSIST is totally reliant on its volunteers, and is organised through a variety of teams. These teams work to:

  • Provide accommodation, food and support for asylum seekers in Sheffield who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress
  • Advance the education of the public, and other statutory and voluntary organisations, in order to assist the inclusion of asylum seekers into the wider community
  • Raise awareness about the plight of asylum seekers in our city
