ORGANIZATION: Sierra Club Alaska Chapter

Lead volunteer team

The Sierra Club is looking for dedicated members who want to take on the exciting and challenging role of being a member of the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter's Executive Committee by running as a candidate in the 2016 election. The Executive Committee, or "ExCom," is the equivalent of an organization's Board of Directors. Since Sierra Club has a Board at the national level, we call chapter and group level Boards "Executive Committees." The Executive Committee is the governing entity of the chapter.

Excom members set the priorities, policies, and budget (with member input) that enable our team to carry out the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter's mission. Each Excom member experiences the rewards and satisfaction of being a part of the team leading the most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. We are committed to seeking a diverse pool of candidates and encourage members from any geographical region, background, race, gender or age to apply.

The Executive Committee is comprised of 5 or 7 elected volunteers, and has the legal responsibility and authority to oversee all staff and volunteer activities of the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter. Together Excom members establish the Chapter's conservation priorities, internal policies, and develop and implement the budget.

Each Excom member is elected for a term of one or two years. Excom members can receive reimbursement for travel and lodging, and can claim a modest per diem during Excom meetings and while on Sierra Club business.

The Sierra Club Alaska Chapter Excom is a working board. All members are expected to devote sufficient time and energy to the tasks at hand. All Excom members are expected to:

  • Represent and promote the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter and its mission, programs, campaigns, and policies to various Sierra Club and public audiences.

  • Provide leadership and vision within the Chapter.

  • Guide and participate in long-term strategic planning.

  • Attend Executive Committee meetings and important related meetings, such as planning retreats and national Chapter trainings.

  • Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time.

  • Stay informed about committee matters, prepare themselves well for meetings, reviews and comments on minutes and reports, and regularly checks emails.

  • Actively assist in fundraising activities or contribute financially.

  • Get to know other committee members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.

  • Support and participate in trainings, campaigns and/or Outings opportunities with the general membership.

Applicants interested in serving should be:

  • Dedicated to the purposes and goals of the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter, including goals around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

  • Able to think strategically, politically, and creatively about a range of environmental issues

  • Able and willing to accept the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of a Excom member

  • Able and willing to commit 5 to 10 hours per month to Excom duties, plus attend monthly meetings.

TO APPLY: If you are a Sierra Club member and would like to run, or would like to nominate another member who is willing to run, please email us with a short bio with the email subject line "Sierra Club Excom."
