If you love writing and want to share that love with young people in Philadelphia, we have a volunteer opportunity that is right for you.
Our Mighty volunteers (over 300 every year!) are Philadelphia writers, playwrights, filmmakers, artists and professionals. We all have three things in common: compassion, patience and a willingness to learn from our students.
Below, you’ll find a brief overview of the opportunities available.
Mighty Tutors work in the Mighty Writers Academy from 3-6pm, Monday through Thursday from September to June. You’ll help students in grades 3-8 with homework and writing activities. New tutors must commit to one day per week for six months. This program runs during the school year only.
Mighty Mentors work one-on-one with young people in grades 4-12. You’ll meet with the same student for one 90-minute session every week for at least six months. Current mentor projects include epic alternate-future stories, collections of rap and poetry, and college application essays.
Workshop Leaders work with our program director to develop short- and long-term writing workshop curricula for students (ages 5-18). Some of our hottest workshops have included: Winter Weather Watch (ages 5-7), Comic Madness (ages 9-12) and Sportswriting (ages 13+). What’s your workshop idea?

Mission Statement
Mighty Writers engages volunteers to deliver free writing instruction and workshops for Philadelphia students in community-based storefront centers. Founded in March 2009, our educational programs serve more than 575 elementary, middle and high school students annually in our South Philadelphia center at 15 th and Christian streets. With the efforts of more than 300 community volunteers, we provide free, drop-in tutoring and creative writing programming for our city's children and youth. Mighty Writers will improve literacy citywide by opening and operating additional centers in West and North Philadelphia to serve more than 2,000 students annually in three accessible locations by 2012.
Description
Our free long- and short-term Writing Workshops serve 500 students annually. Project-based workshops are comprised of up to eight sessions, most lasting 1-2 hours. Each workshop culminates with the production of a tangible final project (e.g. poetry anthology, story compilation, blog, newspaper, comic book, video diary). For example, our Spring 2010 workshop lineup included Writing Movie Reviews, Where I'm From: Writing Your Neighborhood and Garden Writing Club, which featured a community gardening component.
