Fifty percent of AFAC clients speak Spanish so Spanish-speaking volunteers are always appreciated. This fall, we particularly need help with 2 projects. For more information on either one, email us at volunteer4afac@afac.org

1) Beginning the week of September 19th, AFAC's new Healthy Play Initiative program--a pilot program designed to provide children accompanying their parent or guardian to an AFAC distribution center 30-45 minutes of safe, structured healthy play--will kickoff!

We will need a maximum of nine volunteers dedicated to this program, who can commit to help HPI leaders for the length of the school year. Ideally, we would have the same three volunteers at each site during HPI time/distribution time each week. The sites and times are:
  • Arlington Mill Community Center--Mondays--10:45am to 1:15pm
  • South Nelson Street--Wednesdays--9:45am to 12:15pm
  • Gates of Ballston (Buckingham)--Fridays--12:45pm to 3:15pm
2) We need volunteers to help in the warehouse on weekday mornings, 9:15am-12:30pm. You'll help sort and bag donated food or help clients in the distribution area. One time or weekly shifts available at AFAC's Nelson Street location, 2708 S. Nelson Street.

Mission Statement

Our only mission is to feed the hungry, but by relieving the food budget of our clients, we help prevent homelessness, and allow our clients to make other necessary purchases without sacrificing their health and nutritional needs.

Description

The Arlington Food Assistance Center is an incorporated 501c (3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing supplemental food items to Arlington residents who cannot afford to purchase sufficient food to meet their basic needs. We provide groceries to families and individuals referred to us by the Arlington County Department of Human Services, other social service agencies, and the churches of Arlington. We are run entirely by a volunteer Board of Directors, a staff of twelve professionals, and more than 600 volunteers from families, businesses, religious organizations, and public and private social service agencies. AFAC fits neatly into the comprehensive system of service delivery that characterizes the work done by the agencies and churches in Arlington. We support the work of other agencies by letting them concentrate on their area of expertise. If area social workers see a need for food with their clients, they can easily make a referral to us. This system ensures that our clients are legitimate and that the entire range of their needs is being assessed and addressed. AFAC obtains surplus food at a minimal cost from the Capital Area Community Food Bank and at no cost from local bakeries, supermarkets, farmers' markets, food drives, and private donors. These groceries are redistributed to clients who have been referred by private or public agencies or by religious organizations. We do not distribute ready-to-eat food, nor do we provide food on a walk-in basis.
