Volunteer for Food Justice at the Sunday Farmers' Market!

Cause Areas

It's flexible! We'll work with your schedule.

8th & W StreetSacramento, CA 95811

Want to help families eat more fruits and vegetables? Are you passionate about food justice and increasing access to healthy food? As an Alchemist CDC Volunteer, you will help fellow Sacramentans use their CalFresh benefits (formerly known as food stamps) at the Central Farmers' Market (8th and W under the freeway).

Duties for the Farmers’ Market CalFresh/EBT Booth Volunteers include processing EBT transactions, distributing scrip, and collecting scrip from the vendors (farmers). The Volunteer shift is somewhat flexible - there are two-hour morning shifts, two-hour mid-morning shifts, and the full market shift. You’ll be working with an experienced volunteer or staff member at the booth during the most active part of the market to ensure a great experience for the CalFresh recipients and farmers.

Alchemist volunteers have a direct and immediate impact on their community! They spend the morning at the farmers’ market, help to increase local food access, and have fun doing it!

All volunteers receive a hands-on training and we ask that you make a commitment to volunteer at four (4) market days over the first three months. Unsure if you want to commit? Contact our Volunteer Coordinator to shadow an experienced staff or volunteer.

If you want to volunteer but Sundays or the location don’t work for you, please see our other VolunteerMatch listings for other markets all week long across the Sacramento region.

Our Purpose:

By providing the ability to use CalFresh at these markets, Alchemist hopes to make fresh produce more accessible to low-income individuals in these areas, while simultaneously increasing the sales for small-midsize farmers in California. This effort is in keeping with Alchemist CDC’s vision of a vibrant, equitable and diverse Sacramento. Farmers’ markets are an asset to communities, and can lead to improved health for area residents. By making it easier for low-income populations to purchase food at farmers’ markets, implementation of CalFresh acceptance makes these community assets more equitable and accessible to all individuals.
