Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement, in Western Queens, is excited to launch a community mentoring initiative.
We’re looking for adult mentors who have fun with and are energized by spending time with young people ages 10-14. Our mentors are excited to collaborate with young people, flexible in thinking, and open to feedback. This is a group mentoring program and 1-2 mentors will be matched with 3-5 mentees.
Spring/Summer 2022
- Attend an in-person kick-off event in September to meet your mentees. Engage in get-to-know-you activities.
- Attend an evening 2-hour virtual volunteer training
- Communicate weekly with mentees through a virtual mentoring platform.
Fall/Winter 2022
- Participate in a once-a-week, 12-week in-person program. This program will meet in the after-school hours on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM at Queens Public Library at LIC.
- Engage in Riis facilitated group activities to form authentic, supportive relationships and develop mentees; own 'My New York Story’. This story is an exploration of what their neighborhood and community means to them.

Description
A multi-service community-based organization in Long Island City Queens, Riis Settlement offers after-school programs for youth, adolescent services, immigrant services, including adult ESOL classes, and Senior Citizen support programs.
