Purpose and Impact: Bienestar aims to build housing, hope and futures for the well-being of working families in the Hillsboro and Forest Grove area. A major focus of our resident services program is improving educational achievement for students living in our affordable housing properties. As Bienestar’s MpowR Club Program Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with students in grades K-6 and increase their academic potential, with a specific focus on the subjects of math and reading. Working directly with young students over the course of a full academic year, you’ll help to build them a foundation for a lifetime of educational success.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of Bienestar staff, the MpowR Club Program Assistant will:

  • Provide tutoring assistance with homework from all school subjects
  • Promote literacy skills through weekly reading activities
  • Lead hands-on group educational activities and crafts
  • Assist in managing a classroom of 15-24 students

Required Skills:

  • Prior experience working with youth
  • Interest in education, Spanish or a related field
  • Ability to teach students of different backgrounds and ability levels
  • Effective organizational and communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Prior tutoring experience
  • Knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but not required

Time Commitment: The MpowR Club meets for a total of eight hours each week from Monday through Thursday. Program Assistants are asked to remain an extra 30 minutes after each session to record progress notes for the students. Including the extra half hour per session, a commitment of 5 hours per week is preferred.

Site and Supervision: MpowR Club Program Assistants report to Maria Hidalgo, Bienestar’s Youth Education Manager. Between 15 and 24 students may be enrolled in the program at each of the following locations:

Elm Park (Meets Monday and Wednesday, 3-5:30 p.m.)

Juniper Gardens (Meets Tuesday and Thursday, 3-5:30 p.m.)

Volunteer Benefits: MpowR Club Program Assistants will gain valuable experience working with young students in grades K-6, particularly classroom management and tutoring skills. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to build Spanish language skills with native speakers. This position is an excellent opportunity for teachers or anyone considering a career in nonprofit work, youth advocacy, or education.

Bienestar is a 35-year-old nonprofit community development corporation providing affordable housing and resident services to agricultural workers and other low-income families in Washington County. Bienestar owns 12 apartment properties and serves more than 2,000 individuals, about 93% of whom are Latino. In addition, Bienestar has built and sold five lease-to-own homes to farmworker families.

Through our on-site Community Rooms, Bienestar offers free resident services programs, including educational youth and adult programs. These include MpowR Club, financial literacy programs, ESL classes, GED classes, Education Navigation, Summer Lunch and Fun, Explorador Camp, Individualized Development Accounts and more.
