Lower East Side Ecology Center is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to
environmental education through local community based programming. Each year
thousands of NYC students visit our Environmental Learning Center to connect with
the urban environment and learn about the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary. We maintain
several aquariums, terrariums, and other exhibits as teaching tools that require care
and maintenance. Volunteers will be doing water changes, feeding animals, testing
water quality, and other maintenance activities. Interested volunteers may also
have the opportunity to participate in exhibit design.

Mission Statement
The Lower East Side Ecology Center works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.
Description
The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.
The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
