If you’re looking for your next adventure, you’ve just found it...

This is not a holiday. This is an Expedition into life.

(please scroll to the bottom for link to application form)

Raleigh Expedition is an overseas volunteering programme for 17-24 year olds.

Raleigh Expeditions are about bringing people together from all over the world to inspire lasting change. They are an opportunity for you to work on remote community and environmental projects and face adventure challenges in some of the most incredible areas of the world. Our Expeditions are all about variety.

This is why our Expeditions include different people, projects, locations and challenges. There will be people like you and people from different backgrounds and cultures, including local volunteers from the Expedition countries. Together you’ll be a team with a common aim; to bring energy and inspiration to create the world that we want.

Yes it’s international volunteering, but not as you know it

Our experience has taught us that change is best created through bringing together young people and local communities. You’ll be living and working alongside people in remote rural communities. You’ll learn from one another and share traditions and customs. The communities where we work aren’t always the easiest to get to. Indeed, it’s often because they are so hard to access that they need our support. We work in stunning natural environments; environments that you wouldn’t get to access as a tourist and that need protecting.

Expedition is a personal adventure for our volunteers too. Every day will be different. And every day you’ll be challenged and supported by our teams and staff to learn and develop new skills. Skills that will help you grow and set you up for the future.

How does it work?

Our volunteer Expeditions last four, five, seven or 10 weeks. They are made up of a variety of community, adventure and environment projects.

On our 10 week programmes in Borneo, Nicaragua & Costa Rica and Tanzania you will do all three of the different project types or phases. On a seven week programme you will do two of the three phases. On a five week programme you will do a community or an environment phase and a shorter adventure challenge.

As our work is focused on areas where our work has the greatest impact, we are not currently doing environmental projects in Nepal. Instead, on a 10 week programme in Nepal, you will do two community phases and an adventure phase. On the seven week programme you will do an adventure and community phase and on the five week you will do a community and shorter adventure challenge.

An expedition, in three words?

Challenging - Raleigh has a 'never give up attitude’ and we expect our volunteers to share it with us. Expeditions can be tough at times but they are also fun. Our staff, our volunteer managers and your fellow team members will support you throughout. Together you’ll encourage one another to do things and achieve things you never thought possible.

Inspiring - Want to be inspired by people, new environments and new ways of approaching some of the world’s challenges? On expedition you’ll meet people from all over the world. These new friends will open you up to lots of different points of view. And, as for the places we work, once you see how special some of these areas are, you’ll see why they need preserving.

Impactful - We support and encourage you to have an impact where it matters most. Last year over 180,000 people from around the world benefited from our programmes. Our expedition volunteers help empower local communities; by improving people’s access to safe water and sanitation, building stronger communities and protecting the world’s resources. This is your chance to create change in the communities we work in and develop skills for yourself.

Mission Statement

Today more people than ever before are working together to create sustainable change around the world. Despite this, there is much more work to be done. We connect communities wanting to improve their lives and their environment with passionate people from around the world who want to take positive action. By working alongside young people to create positive change, communities develop their knowledge and confidence and become more empowered. The energy and motivation of empowered people leads to lasting change. What do we mean by lasting change? We mean behaviour change. We can demonstrate that our unique approach is a catalyst for positive behaviour change at both the community level and amongst the young people who volunteer with us.

Description

People worldwide face many barriers to creating change. And solutions to change must balance economic, environmental and social needs to be sustainable. In many cases this requires new ways of thinking and doing.

We connect communities wanting to improve their lives and their environment with passionate people from around the world who want to take positive action.

We believe that young people are the generation that has the energy, optimism and creativity to make change happen. And they are open to new ways of thinking and doing.

By working alongside young people to create positive change, communities develop their knowledge and confidence and become more empowered.

The energy and motivation of empowered people leads to lasting change.

The outcome is a better quality of life for everyone.

With our local and international volunteers, project partners, local communities, funders, and 40,000 previous volunteers, we form a global community who are passionate about working together to build a sustainable future.
