About LOWCOUNTRY MARITIME SOCIETY
Location:

Mission Statement
To help facilitate and promote the connection of the Coastal South Carolina community with our natural marine environment and maritime heritage through hands on boatbuilding and exploration of the local maritime culture.
Description
We believe that our natural marine environment in the Lowcountry is stunningly beautiful and full of life. Our towns, cities, and people have developed to where they are today because of this environment. We cherish our shorelines; our marshes, beaches, and our rivers.
The Lowcountry Maritime Society wants to celebrate these aspects of our region. For many people, access to the water is extremely limited, this weakens our communal identity as a coastal community. We want to share what we love by providing marine based opportunities and experiences to others.
Our country as a whole is suffering a deficit in education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Math is the weakest of these necessary skills.
The South Carolina Lowcountry is not excluded from this deficit. In addition to the lack of math skills, many of our region’s children lack access to the most quintessential part of our area, our water. In a region that is defined by the water, it is important that we educate our youth about the significance of our marine environment, our maritime heritage, as well as provide an opportunity to learn a skill that serves as an introduction to our maritime culture or industry.
It is our mission to encourage our youth towards higher education and to preserve our maritime heritage in the process.
