Global Potential (GP) is a non-profit organization founded in 2007. GP provides urban youth from low-income communities with an eighteen month leadership program, giving them the skills and perspective to effect positive change in their lives and communities. Youth engage in leadership training, social entrepreneurship, international cultural exchange and service learning. GP's vision is that as youth develop, communities develop.

Global Potential is currently seeking an individual for an Accounting Associate position. This position will primarily process, track and report financial transactions and will interact, in various degrees, with the CFO, CEO, Finance Committee and Program staff.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Process and record all cash receipt and cash disbursement transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Includes preparation of computer and manual checks, wire transfers and bank deposits.

  • Monitor and record donation transactions from various funding platforms (e.g., Network for Good, Razoo, AmazonSmiles).

  • Assist in processing payroll transactions and federal, state and / or local payroll tax filings by due dates.

  • Monitor, record and reconcile petty cash transactions.

  • Review all accounting transactions for adherence to organization’s accounting procedures and policies manual; work with staff to assure compliance.

  • Work with staff to facilitate proper capture, recording and reconciliation of summer program cash advances and expense reporting.

  • Prepare monthly bank account reconciliations.

  • Prepare QBO to Salesforce revenue reconciliations.

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of various grant / reimbursement requests (e.g., NY City Council, Department of Youth and Community Development, US Department of State).

  • Assist in the preparation of annual budget and quarterly re-forecasts. Includes maintenance of budget model, interaction with CFO, Program staff and / or Board members.

  • Prepare monthly and / or quarterly financial statement package for management and / or Board review.

  • Research and explain budget to actual variances.

  • Assist in preparation of information required for annual audit and tax filings.

  • Assist in the preparation and filing of GP financial and other information on various not-for-profit and regulatory websites (e.g., Charity Navigator, Guidestar, NY Charities Bureau).

  • Assist in maintenance and update of chart of accounts, chart of departments and accounting policies and procedures manual.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, highly organized, enthusiastic personality.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong communication, organizational and time-management skills.

  • Strong computer skills (Mac or PC).

  • Intermediate-level understanding of accounting (i.e., more than a single, basic-level accounting course).

  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting a plus.

  • Working familiarity with general ledger applications. Knowledge of QBO a plus.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word. Knowledge of Power Point a plus.

  • Knowledge of Google applications (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive) a plus

  • Knowledge of Salesforce a plus.

Education:

  • Degree in Accounting or other financial / business discipline or current degree-seeking (major or minor) accounting student.

Commitment

  • 8-15 hours weekly for at least 6 months.
