Gallery hosts serve a critical role in museum guest services - engaging and assisting visitors, and monitoring and maintaining the gallery floor and exhibits.

Visitor Engagement:

The museum vision includes connecting with visitors on many levels and prioritizing the visitor experience. A Gallery Host’s role is to greet and assist visitors. This helps visitors feel welcome and lets them know we are here to help, if needed. We know approaching visitors takes practice and confidence! Always intervene positively and friendly.

"Hi I am Claire. I am volunteer Gallery Host. I will be here if you have any questions. What brought you in today?"

Visitor Engagement includes:

Greeting visitors

Answering questions

Telling them about programs/exhibits

Helping with way-finding


Information Resource:

Gallery Hosts should increasingly familiarize themselves with the exhibits, programs and services of the museum over time. Ideally, hosts develop a comfort level with the gallery content and directing visitors to things that may interest them.

Identify three favorite exhibits you feel comfortable talking about

Attend training and development opportunities

Exhibit Support:

Gallery Hosts are some of the museum’s critical operations staff in helping us maintain exhibits.

Restock consumables

"Reset" exhibits for exploration

Help visitors positively experience exhibits

Inform staff of broken/malfunctioning exhibits

Stay up-to-date on exhibits changes by reading 'Exhibits Updates’ folder in volunteer area


Museum Ambassadors:

Volunteers are the museum’s greatest resource and advocates in the community. Your awareness and enthusiasm for our exhibits, programs, experience and initiatives is critical. Your positivity, excitement and involvement is invaluable.

Tell others about things you do and enjoy at the museum

Invite others to the museum or programs

Invite others to volunteer

Gallery Host opportunities:

Gallery Host shifts are typically 2 hours each. Special Events may have longer shifts. We ask that volunteers sign up for 3 shifts per month. The timing is flexible:

Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-5:00

Museum special events (These opportunities will be shared via Monthly Opportunities Newsletters emailed to volunteers)
