Bike for Life event is a bi-yearly event UTH hosts so special needs children can learn to ride bikes! A volunteer for the Bike for Life event needs to be willing to hold onto a bike, help a child steer a bike, provide encouragement, etc. as the child learns to ride their bike. We will also assign a few volunteers to helping the participants get suited up and properly checked in! All volunteers will be at the event from 1pm-5:30pm on the day of the event.
Be aware, the participants in the Bike for Life could range from age 3 through 18 as our clientele ranges from that age. These participants are often cognitively challenged or motorically challenged so learning to ride has been hard for them. They also could appear "typical" but have a disorder such as autism, or have a history of being shy, nervous, or a lack of exposure or desire that has prevented them from learning. We anticipate that for every participant that registers we will need 3-4 volunteers to help them.
Volunteers can be middle school aged or above. Individuals and organizations are welcome to offer to volunteer. Excellent communication, patience, and organization is expected in this position. Volunteers who succeed in this position are reliable, punctual, well spoken, good at taking initiative and thinking ahead.
Volunteers will be required to complete a volunteer form and a liability form prior to commitment. Additionally, volunteers will receive details of their responsibilities one week prior to the event. This position can be a volunteer position or used for class credit, practicum, or internship.
Prior to requesting to be considered for this position please visit our agency’s website at www.unitedthroughhope.org to view what we do and whom we serve.

All of our programs are designed to foster self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging and empowerment.
