About

The Nyingma Institute in Berkeley has an immediate opening for a Maintenance Technician. Nyingma Institute is an educational center offering classes to the public on Tibetan meditation, Kum Nye yoga, healing, and traditional Buddhist practices. Nyingma Institute is also home to a community of resident volunteers. The facilities consist of two main buildings and a beautiful garden with a small pond.

We need a Maintenance Tech to join our team that will share our high standards for quality with a strong commitment to making our premises a beautiful place to visit and live.

This position is responsible for various maintenance duties and handling service requests requiring technical labor skills, including, but not limited to repairs and adjustments, electrical installations, plumbing, pond maintenance, light carpentry/construction, pouring concrete, painting, and appliance repair. Prepares vacant units for occupancy and completes maintenance checklist. Keeps records of maintenance work performed and materials used.

Prior experience in Maintenance is preferred but not required. Position requires a HS Diploma or sufficient education and training. 5 years of maintenance/utility experience or related experience in facilities, building, and electrical, framing, mechanical and plumbing trades. Must be a flexible team player and maintain an open, positive attitude.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to join our hardworking, dedicated all-volunteer team. We ask for a 1-year initial commitment. The first month will serve as a non-binding trial period, after which the arrangement may be reassessed and amended. We work 6 days a week, 8 hours each day and approach work as a form of spiritual practice. We offer a shared room and board, access to morning meditation sessions and evening classes, and a small stipend. You need not be Buddhist to apply, just open and comfortable with living respectfully in a Buddhist setting. All meals served from our kitchen are vegetarian, and we ask that there be no smoking or intoxicant use on site.
