Project Lead/Creator: Electric Canoes in the Rainforest

Bote Grande
Large dugout canoe typical for moving people or goods

We work with folks in the remote rain forest of Panama. They get around by motorized canoe, and we are very interested in introducing electric motors to the area. Electric outboards exist, and are growing in power and range, and slowly dropping in price.

We are looking for someone to make this project a reality. Create relationships with the electric motor companies, battery companies, solar panel companies...inspire them with the opportunity, and pull it all together.

This is an exciting chance to spread sustainable technology, and open up a whole new region to sustainable transport. If you see it rather as a business opportunity, then we could engage local indigenous people in creating it to generate their own income.

Does that light you up? Then please join our team!

Mission Statement

We support indigenous people as they celebrate and teach their ancestral knowledge and create thriving modern communities aligned with their traditional vision.

Description

We collaborate with the Emberá and Wounaan people in Darién, Panama. We sponsor programs of classes in which elders teach the youngers the traditional culture and language, aiming to sustain personal and communal options for independence and resilience. To support a community's own desires for sustainable technological development, we also offer workshops and discussions about sustainable growth options.

We are guided by an all-Indigenous Advisory Council, which since 2017 has focused us on language. We proudly ran the first ever in-community classes in the Emberá language in 2018, and are aiming to expand that work.

We are inspired by these and other organizations: Pachamama Alliance, Four Worlds International, The Barefoot College, Local Futures, Schooling the World, and Cultural Survival.
