There are opportunities to help ASSIST with our Welfare Payments scheme for destitute asylum seekers who are in desperate need. We provide small weekly welfare payments for food and basic living expenses. We provide free bus passes to enable clients to travel to attend medical, legal and Home Office appointments.

The role of Welfare Payments Volunteer takes place weekly on Wednesdays from 11am - 2:30pm, and includes administration and providing payments.
Administration in the morning includes providing administrative support for welfare payments to ASSIST clients; handling queries in person, by telephone and email; copying, faxing, scanning and filing documents in the morning. Providing payments in the afternoon includes greeting clients; managing queues; checking client identity, making payments and asking for signatures; returning unused payments to office; ensuring money is secure; referring clients to Help Desk

For this role you should be; trustworthy, committed and reliable; r espectful of diversity and cultural difference, able to communicate well in verbal and written English; at least basic mathematical and IT skills; patient and calm in a busy environment; a second language is helpful, but not essential.
You will have an ASSIST induction session, and ongoing training within your team. You will also have access to other ASSIST training sessions eg. Introduction to UK Asylum processes, Listening skills.

ASSIST Sheffield is currently the only Sheffield charity focused on destitution among asylum seekers. We help by providing accommodation, advice and other support to those in most need or distress.
Description
ASSIST is totally reliant on its volunteers, and is organised through a variety of teams. These teams work to:
- Provide accommodation, food and support for asylum seekers in Sheffield who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress
- Advance the education of the public, and other statutory and voluntary organisations, in order to assist the inclusion of asylum seekers into the wider community
- Raise awareness about the plight of asylum seekers in our city
