As a Night Shelter Volunteer you will work with others to welcome guests to the Night Shelter, talk to guests and oversee 'lights out', and stay overnight with guests in our church hall location.

Skills and capabilities that you would need to begin this role:

  • Approachable and friendly, open minded, with a willingness to listen and reassure others

  • Respect for diversity and cultural difference, and willingness to work with asylum seekers

  • Reliable, committed, calm and level headed

  • Able to keep confidentiality appropriately

  • Willing to take responsibility for security

  • Confident and able to encourage others to do what is expected of them (tidying the venue)

  • A second language is an advantage, but not essential


Volunteers should be available for a maximum of two sessions a month. The Night Shelter is open from Monday evening to Saturday morning, and volunteers would be required to stay overnight from 10pm to 8am.

Mission Statement

ASSIST Sheffield is currently the only Sheffield charity focused on destitution among asylum seekers. We help by providing accommodation, advice and other support to those in most need or distress.

Description

ASSIST is totally reliant on its volunteers, and is organised through a variety of teams. These teams work to:

  • Provide accommodation, food and support for asylum seekers in Sheffield who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress
  • Advance the education of the public, and other statutory and voluntary organisations, in order to assist the inclusion of asylum seekers into the wider community
  • Raise awareness about the plight of asylum seekers in our city
