Students Helping Iowa’s Newcomers Excel (SHINE!) celebrates diversity, fosters resiliency, and encourages refugee and immigrant youth to reach their full potential. The weekly after-school program for high school students builds a peer mentor base to strengthen social and academic support for refugee youth. The program includes language learning, cultural orientation, and community exploration. Volunteers are asked to assist AmeriCorps VISTA members in teaching weekly classes, chaperoning field trips, and if interested will be invited to help plan lessons. Description

For 100 years, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) has given hope and new life to persons fleeing from war, violence and persecution in their home country. A catalyst for refugee rights and advocacy, USCRI has changed the lives of thousands of newly arriving Americans and continues to do so through various program support.

USCRI Des Moines supports refugees beginning their new lives in the U.S. by providing immediate needs, core services and community orientations. Through collaborative support between USCRI and local businesses, organizations and individuals, each newly arriving American is given tools and resources to successfully adapt to life in the Greater Des Moines area.

Community involvement is an essential piece of refugee resettlement. You can help refugees transition to a new life in the Greater Des Moines area by volunteering, donating money or goods, or by partnering with USCRI to serve refugees.
