Sign up to help with the Virginia Zoo's biggest event of the year - Zoo Boo! Please see the different volunteer opportunities available that day: Candy Host - Want to help keep the candy bowls full during Zoo Boo? Sign up to volunteer as a Candy Host! Volunteers will help refill candy stations around the zoo during the event. This requires the ability to lift and carry items up to 20 pounds. Costumed Character - Do you like dressing up in costume? Sign up to be one of our Costumed Characters during Zoo Boo! Themes include Snoopy, Alice in Wonderland, Game Land, Peter Pan, Clowns, Super Heroes, Princesses, Cowboys and Shrek! We have all of the costume items you will need. Costumed Character volunteers will have their make-up done at the zoo by our staff and volunteers or can do their own as long as it is pre-approved. Make-Up Artist - Are you artsy and enjoy doing costume make-up? Our Make-Up Artist volunteers will assist our Costumed Characters in "getting into character" during the event. Volunteers will assist in applying make-up at the start of the event. Volunteers will then assist with other activities as needed throughout the day. Craft Host - If you love kids and making crafts, our Craft Host volunteer position is for you! We will have several craft stations around the zoo and volunteers will help supervise our young guests in making art, masks, and other fun items. Game Host - If you love arcade-style games, sign up to be a Game Host volunteer. Games this year include basketball, ring toss, sand bag toss and more. Volunteers will assist in resetting the games in between guests and providing a fun atmosphere for the participants. Parking Attendant - During our biggest event of the year, we need to make sure our guests have a place to park to enjoy the fun and games. Parking Attendant volunteers will help staff direct vehicles to open spaces in the parking lot. All shifts are from 8 am - 7 pm. You must commit to the entire shift. Volunteers will meet at a check-in table at the entrance to the zoo and then be assigned their lead for the day. All volunteers will be provided water, snacks, lunch, and dinner during the event.
