CalSERVES Volunteering

1. Homework helpers: Volunteer with a particular class/grade and help the students complete their homework. Requires patience (especially with the lower grades) and the ability to explain basic academic topics to the students.

2. Garden Volunteers: Volunteers to help maintain our school garden. If interested, could lead a Cool School Garden Club to teach our students about plants, agriculture, sustainable living etc...

3. Personal Interest Volunteers: Volunteers will choose an area of interest to them, then teach it to the students. This can be a one-time presentation or can be an ongoing club. In the past, we had a Photography Club, run by a local college student, and other sites have had Biology Club or Soccer Clubs. Areas that would be neat to bring to Kawana might be: technology, life skills, sports, crafts, arts.

4. One-Time Event Volunteers: volunteers to provide general support to events, including: end-of-year Carnival, Halloween event, Book Drive, Talent Show. These volunteers could run stations, help set-up/clean-up, provide food, etc.

5. Presenters: Volunteers to present at events like: Career Day, Diversity/Multicultural Day, College Panel. These volunteers will tell their stories to students, answer questions, and encourage the students to explore different aspects of their lives/futures.

Other CalSERVES VIP Fellows will also be recruiting for several non-profits in the area. The list above is just volunteers that we are looking for at school sites. Please feel free to email: americorps@calserves.org with any questions!

Mission Statement

CalSERVES provides opportunities to discover passions, realize potential, and express power. We engage AmeriCorps members in service opportunities throughout Southwest Santa Rosa. Our members provide one-on-one literacy tutoring, run after school programs, operate as community leaders, and build volunteer capacity in under-served communities.

Description

CalSERVES, a local education organization, is looking for volunteers to work with K-8 grade students after school! Are you hard-working, reliable, and positive with a readiness to share your skills and interests? If so, we are excited to meet you! Our program runs in 8 schools in Southwest Santa Rosa. Our needs vary from site-to-site, but overall we are looking for compassionate individuals to support literacy, homework help (group or one-on-one), provide classroom support, or support fun clubs. Volunteers would help keep kids on task, answer questions, and encourage participation. Specialty is a unique part of our program, and our day. Our kids cycle through Art, Math, Nutrition, Garden, P.E., and Science each week to learn about important topics. If you have a particular interest in one of these areas, this is the program for you! We always need support and expertise to provide fun, academically focused activities for our kids.

If you want to help make a difference in your community, earn some priceless work experience, and be a positive role model for kids in need, CalSERVES is a great opportunity!
