About

826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.


The Position

The Volunteer Coordinator plays the essential role of bringing volunteer support to 826CHI’s programming and mission. Through recruitment, training, management and appreciation, the Volunteer Coordinator ensures that supporter s are informed and effective as they engagement in direct service with 826CHI students. This position emphasizes the cultivation of a rich community that carries out 826CHI’s mission. This is an ideal opportunity for a self-directed, very organized person with a passion for youth education, community development, and civic engagement.


Key Responsibilities

Manages volunteer recruitment, communications, and appreciation

-Updates 826CHI volunteer listings on major list volunteer serves in Chicago

-Coordinates and leads New Volunteer Orientations

-Uses Salesforce to manage all volunteer paperwork and oversees screening

-Collects volunteer needs across the org and organizes into a bi-weekly Volunteer Opps email

-Recognizes volunteers through thank-you emails and The Spy of the Month

-Work with Events Coordinator to plan annual volunteer appreciation events and 100 Club

-Expands existing service learning partnerships and manages student training

Manages 826CHI’s volunteer training programs

-Works with programming staff to plan the Vol/loquium training sessions

-Works with programming staff to generate training materials

-Manages The 826CHI Vol/loquium website

-Makes all volunteer resources available on the Vol/loquim website

Manages VEST, The Volunteer Engagement Support Team

-Facilitates monthly meetings

-Encourages and supports VEST projects around volunteer community-building

Manage 826CHI’s Internship Program

-Works with Communications Manager to update internship content on the 826CHI website

-Screens and selects candidates, creates schedule and plans orientation

-Manage program evaluation and appreciation

-Connect with alums through the management of 826CHI’s Intern Alum FB page, The Secret Society


Reporting

The Volunteer Coordinator reports to Director of Programming, and is a member of the Programming Team.

Qualifications and skills:

  • BA required

  • Minimum 2 years experience with volunteer management experience

  • Demonstrated understanding of non-profit management and volunteer support methods

  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral including public speaking

  • Excellent organizational skills & the ability to multitask

  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to manage multiple independent projects successfully

  • Enthusiastic belief in the mission of 826CHI

  • Outgoing, personable, and with a good sense of humor

826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after-school tutoring, weekend workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice.

826CHI is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our writing programs, as well as with other aspects of the organization (supporting the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co., providing graphic design and illustration for our student publications).
