Mission Statement

SUMMIT supports volunteers to work with inner city students and their families to establish high goals for their educational excellence and character development. SUMMIT matches volunteers with a student in structured tutoring program that fosters intellectual, cultural, and moral growth.

Description

Be a Tutor and Mentor!

SUMMIT is the initiative of a group of professional men and women devoted to helping Milwaukee's inner city children avoid obstacles and overcome difficult educational, social, or familial circumstances and 'reach for excellence'.

Our particular focus is to help at-risk kids connect with caring volunteers who motivate them to raise their goals, strengthen their characters, deepen their fvalues and complete their education. SUMMIT programs are offered to boys and girls regardless of race, creed, or national origin and are inspired by the social teachings of the Catholic Church.

SUMMIT works with students once a week for two hours. One hour is spent on individual tutoring and mentoring followed by a 15 minute character talk, and 45 minutes of sports.

SUMMIT has monthly seminars for parents on topics which include family leadership. This also gives volunteers the opportunity to meet with their students parents.

SUMMIT has a seven week full day (5 hr/ day, 5 day/week) summer program called the "Summit Olympics" which consists of 1/2 day of academics (reading, math and character) and 1/2 day of sports. There are weekly field trips and career presentations in addition to semi-weekly one-on-one advising by university students, who serve as the staff for the summer.
