Help create a wonderful experience for our visitors, keep our organization strong, and make our landscape and gardens beautiful. We rely on our volunteers’ help, expertise, and energy and make sure they receive excellent training and support. We offer numerous volunteer opportunities for various age groups and interests. As a volunteer, you’ll spend time with our other wonderful volunteers and our talented staff. You’ll delight in and share our guests’ enthusiasm for this wondrous place. You’ll be part of our family!

Here are some volunteer opportunities that you mind find interesting:

  • Animal Care - We have a need for volunteers who enjoy caring for our teaching animals (turtles, fish, corn snake, stick insects, snails, millepedes, etc.) We are looking for responsible volunteers who can commit to caring for our animals one day each week.
  • Living Building - The Hitchcock Center is one of only 34 "living buildings" in the world. Like any home, it takes a lot of work to maintain our building. We can use help checking potable water levels, organizing classroom materials, monitoring restrooms, compostable waste bins, water barrels, roof drains, and maintaining the exterior of the building and grounds.
  • Visitor Center - This involves answering questions, helping keep the visit center and library tidy, helping with interactive exhibits, answering phones, etc..
  • Supporting the Education Programs - Helping prep materials (e.g. crafts, supply bags, etc.) that the educators use in their outdoor class sessions.

About Hitchcock Center for the Environment

Location:

845 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002, US

Mission Statement

The Hitchcock Center’s mission is to foster a greater awareness and understanding of our environment and to develop environmentally literate citizens.

Description

Hitchcock Center programs are designed to use the study of science and nature, its models, systems, processes, and elements, as a means to provide creative inspiration to solve human problems sustainably. Our programs serve to develop a continuum of competencies that begin at the earliest, most formative years and progress through a process of lifelong learning to engender a greater understanding of the interdependence of the environment, economy, and social issues.

Our approach to education uses the environment as classroom and defines place at a variety of scales - the schoolyard, the backyard, the neighborhood, the park, the farm, the town, the forest, the pond, the mountains, and the watershed. In these settings, the Hitchcock Center helps thousands of children and adults see and understand the impacts of our actions. Through our programs, we make connections to where our food comes from and where our waste goes. We help people understand our intimate relationship with the critical life-sustaining processes that support us.
