Uganda: Special Educational Needs Teacher

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: GlobalGiving

Come and work in beautiful western Uganda and help children with disabilities living in extreme poverty. Widespread belief that children with disabilities have an untreatable curse or are demonic mean that they are excluded from their communities and neglected by their families. Many of these disabilities can be treated and community awareness campaigns and interventions are working to change these beliefs. only 9% of children with disabilities in Uganda attend school, because there is so little support or understanding available for their individual learning needs.

The special educational needs teacher will join an existing team of physical and occupational therapists and community health workers to provide comprehensive assessment and intervention for children with disabilities and their families within outpatient clinics and community outreach to individual homes, schools and health centres. You will provide training to local Ugandan schools to aid the integration of children with disabilities into mainstream classes, including capacity building, assessments and individual education plans. Some teachers will have received basic special education training previously. The role will require the use of problem solving, adaptability and initiative as there are very few resources available.

You will also be involved in the training and development of current KCDC staff to enhance their knowledge and skills as well as working with parent support groups and other community workers to support children and their families where they need it most.

Skills Required:

Experience with special needs education, with a related degree
Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills in English

About GlobalGiving

Mission Statement

Build an efficient, open, thriving marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them.

Description

GlobalGiving was founded by two former World Bank executives who decided to use the Internet to create a highly efficient marketplace. The GlobalGiving platform enables more funding to reach projects throughout the globe, and, at the same time, provides a more transparent, engaging way for donors to give.
Because we enable donors to give directly to projects, they know exactly where their money is going. Donors can see progress updates on most projects as funding is received and goals are met.

Donations made through GlobalGiving are higher impact because:

  • Money is going directly to a well-defined project versus supporting general operating expenses
  • Projects on globalgiving.com have exposure to thousands of donors, enabling us to aggregate multiple sources of funding for each project
  • Many projects on globalgiving.com are located in the developing world where a little money goes a long way
