Sun 24 (https://staging.sun24.solar) is a nonprofit that partners with the Catholic Church in Africa to distribute solar lights to families (Catholic and non-Catholic) without electricity. 1.3 billion people worldwide have no electricity. Most use crude kerosene lamps that emit toxic fumes, are a fire risk and are expensive to operate (purchase of kerosene).

These kerosene lamps also contribute hugely to climate change. One climate change expert said: " There are no magic bullets that will solve all of our greenhouse gas problems, but replacing kerosene lamps is low-hanging fruit, and we don’t have many examples of that in the climate world."

Each solar light that we distribute replaces one kerosene lamp, saving the equivalent of 1.8 tonnes of CO2 over the two-year lifespan of the solar light. That equates to $2.22 / tonne of CO2 mitigated.

We are seeking a volunteer to research other climate mitigation projects and list the best in order of cost per ton of CO2 (or CO2 equivalent) mitigated. We would like to focus on projects that have concrete numbers, not guesses.

We suspect that Sun24 will be near the top of the list at $2.22/tonne.

(I am sorry this is listed under Timeless Tunes, another of our projects. Volunteer Match confuses us a little on how to create related nonprofits so we went this route.)

Thanks for your interest!

About Timeless Tunes

Location:

1815 W Jetton Ave, Tampa, FL 33606, US

Mission Statement

To provide free mp3 players and headphones to all people with dementia in the United States.

Description

Timeless Tunes, in partnership with the local Alzheimer's Association, provides free mp3 players and headphones to people with dementia. As most memory is erased by this horrible disease, music memory usually remains. People with advanced dementia may not seem to enjoy anything. But, they often react with such obvious joy when listening to music from their youth. Our local pilot has been a phenomenal success. We plan a national roll-out shortly.
