Rock Band Club
Guitar room!

SF International High School is an amazing small school in SFUSD of 100% recent immigrant students learning English. We have an amazing community and school, but sadly no music program. I'm a full time English teacher, and also a musician, and I need help running the lunchtime and after school "Rock Band Club!" If you have even the most basic understanding of piano, guitar, bass or drums, come rock with us. It's a club for beginners to learn, and I just need more help to keep up with demand. We have about 18 acoustic guitars, 3 or 4 electric guitars (and amps), 3 or 4 electric basses (and amps), 5 or 6 keyboards (and amps), two drumsets, and a vocal PA. We also have good curriculum and song sheet music in a simplified form great for beginners (including modern pop songs that kids are familiar with).

Normally we have a brief meeting with all students at the start of the club meeting, to listen to the song we are working on learning, and to make a plan. Then we divide up into different classrooms -- guitars in one room, pianos in one, bass and drums in another. You would take a small group of students (2-8 students) and help them learn their part for the song. We are talking SUPER basic chords. Then at the end of club meeting we all join back together and try playing the song together!

Would love to have someone who can come every week during the school year, more or less. It could be during lunch (12:05-12:50) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, or it could be after school (3:15-4:45) on Mondays or Thursdays. Or some combination of those!

Once we talk to see if it's a good fit, you would need to go through the volunteer induction process at one of our two partner organizations: SF Education Fund or Refugee Transitions (which do background checks, etc.)

Mission Statement

Our school provides a safe, supportive environment that prepares immigrant youth for college and their careers.

Description

Our school is a close-knit, supportive community for students who may feel displaced after moving from another country and are unfamiliar with American language and culture. Differences among students are cherished and nurtured as they are continually encouraged to celebrate their cultural and linguistic individuality. We also believe that recent immigrants are capable of the highest levels of academic success when given the support they need.

Because of these beliefs, our program is designed around these key features:

Experiential Learning
Learning goes beyond the walls of the school through community participation, career internships, and academic projects.

Small Size
Each grade level has only 100 students. Class sizes are 25 students or less. Our team structure allows for personalization, growth, and success for our students.

Language Development through the Content Areas
Students learn academic English skills most effectively in a meaningful context and their skills will emerge most naturally in purposeful, language-rich, experiential, interdisciplinary study

College Preparatory Focus
Students receive significant support to become prepared academically for success in college. Starting in 9th grade, students begin to explore options for college.

Career Exploration
In their junior and senior years, seniors will have opportunities for internships and community service in different settings, from businesses to government offices to community organizations.
