Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets is a resource center and shelter for young adults experienceing homelessness. Founded by the young adults it serves, PSKS operates on a model of low barrier, community oriented services that foster empowerment and opportunity. The population of PSKS is roughly 50% LGBTQ identified, and is the only shelter to allow pets.

Here's where you come in: We are in the process of addressing the health needs of our participant community. Our goal is to have a healthcare professional (or soon to be professional) in the center to provide basic first aid and consultation. Due to our facilities, extensive care is not possible, but referral to other providers is possible, and can be facilitated by volunteers.

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to be in our drop in center once a week, and in our night shelter once a week. The schedule is very flexible, and will accomodate your availability. Ideally, you will only have to be responsible for one daytime OR one evening shift per month or week.

If you are interested, contact Joe Lambright at joe.lambright@psks.org for more info!

Mission Statement

Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets (PSKS) exists to support homeless and at-risk youth and young adults to become empowered to lead positive and self-sufficient lives. Our philosophy and practice of inclusion has allowed us to develop low access barriers to engage young people who are at risk of falling through gaps in community services.

Description

Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets (PSKS) provides support and services to Seattle area homeless youth and young adults ages 13 through 29. Our committed efforts are targeted at providing stepping stones to transition youths from the streets to self-sufficiency and productive roles in community. Find out how you can support our community by either volunteering, donating or by increasing awareness of these important issues.

Many of our clients are squatters, have animal companions and/or children, suffering from addiction or have other circumstances that make it tough to find indoor shelter. Most of our youth don’t follow the linear flow of shelter to transitional housing to secure housing. Often they are living under bridges, in cars or tents in the woods until they can secure their own housing. Our approach to basic needs is one of harm reduction-making human safety, health and security a priority whether they are living in an abandoned building or still struggling with substance abuse.

Your presence both as a caring volunteer and as a role model has a significant effect on both the atmosphere of the space, and the confidence of our participants. There is nothing more beneficial to an underserved population than a caring community, and that is something that you and a volunteer have the ability to provide. We are a tight knit organization, and are always open and willing to bring in people from any walk of life.
