Summary of Position:IU Health Simon Cancer Resource Center (CRC) volunteers will increase access to the most up to date cancer related information by assisting those who have a concern about cancer. The Cancer Resource Center is a designated space within the community where trained and certified IU Health Simon volunteers provide support to cancer patients, their family members and caregivers, through the delivery of cancer information, coordinating agencies’ programs and services, referrals to community resources. Nature and Scope:

Training and Supervision:Training will be provided through the IU Health Simon Cancer Resource Center along with the cancer center Patient Resource Coordinator. Supervision provided by the Patient Resource Coordinator, Practice Operations Supervisor, and/or the Administrative Director.

Time Commitment:Approximately four (4) hours, MINIMUM one (1) shift, per month (preferably more) and stay in the role for at least six (6) months. The time commitment includes shifts between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Essential Functions:

All volunteers will be held accountable to the Indiana University Health Simon Standards of Service that is defined by Service Excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requirements include:

  • An individual with a friendly and approachable personality

  • Sensitivity to the needs of cancer patients/family

  • Compassion, professionalism and tact in conversation and attitude

  • Ability to take initiative and follow directions

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to exercise tact and discretion

  • Ability to be flexible in order to handle workload from various sources

  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge and understanding of hospital and department policies and procedures

  • Ability to handle discretionary and confidential information

  • Must have an interest in close patient contact

Specific Duties:

  • Assist with directions throughout the cancer center

  • Provide support with the needs of the patient and/or family member

  • Provide or connect visitors with information about IU Health and participating agencies’ programs and services, community resources and resources within the CRC

  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance of the CRC

  • Notify the volunteer coordinator/staff partner when supplies and/or literature are needed

  • Maintain accurate information using IU Health Information Forms

  • Provide timely feedback to volunteer coordinator/staff partner with regard to complaints, suggestions or concerns

  • Proactively promote IU Health Simon and local support organizations’ programs and services to cancer patients and family members

  • Identify new listings for the Community Resources Database

  • Sign IU Health Privacy & Confidentiality Statement and adhere to all IU Health privacy and confidentiality policies

  • Attend CRC training and be certified annually by IU Health

  • Attend service meetings and trainings, as necessary

  • Dress professionally, neatly and appropriately to the setting, and meet dress code standards of IU Health Simon

  • Fulfill all responsibilities detailed in the Volunteer Job Description

  • Follow all IU Health Simon Cancer Resource Center guidelines and standards of operation

  • Identify self as an IU Health Simon Cancer Resource Center volunteer

  • Demonstrate appropriate level of computer skills

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers complete application process, which includes health screen with employee health nurse, completion of background check, interview with Manager, Volunteer Services, the department specific liaison, and attend a scheduled general orientation.

  • Annually will be required to complete annual mandatory updates and TB test.

  • Service specific training will be provided, to include formal volunteer training with the IU Health Simon Cancer Resource Center

  • Volunteers will adhere to uniform policy and have nametag on and visible at all times while volunteering. Black or khaki slacks, red volunteer jacket and closed toe shoes.

  • Must understand the importance of patient confidentiality and have form completed -signed and on file.
