Community Rebuilds invites up to 16 interns per term to build two straw bale homes from foundation to finish under the direction of a licensed contractor and natural building experts. Interns will contribute to the foundation, frame walls, install bales, apply a variety of natural plasters, pour adobe floors, learn about electrical , plumbing, solar photov oltaics and permaculture, and take part in many other activities necessary to the completion of a home. Semesters are subject to some variability, as the schedule of any build is dependent on many factors, such as weather and unforeseeable build challenges. However, we assure that you will be an integral part of the current build and will gain an unparalleled amount of natural and conventional construction experience. Additionally, though our internship program primarily consists of onsite, hands-on learning, the experience is occasionally supplemented with workshops, conferences, and field trips. There are no graded assignments, tests, or readings.

Our program is very team-oriented. Interns work together onsite and live together in a home provided by CR. They often get to know our selected homeowners quite well as they work with them side by side in the creation of their home. Similarly, because our CR chapters are located in wonderful, unique communities, interns have many opportunities to make new friends, perhaps volunteer with other awesome organizations, and invest a little piece of themselves into our CR communities. These partnerships are important to our organization which is based on the understanding that we are all neighbors ready to support each other and make our community better.

Interns are compensated not only with the education in natural building, but they are also provided with free housing and a food stipend for the term. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to live, work and play in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Moab is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Bike, climb, paddle, hike, camp, ski all within an hour of town.

Mission Statement

OUR MISSION is to build energy-efficient housing, provide education on sustainability and improve the housing conditions of the workforce through an affordable program.

Description

At Community Rebuilds we aid income-qualifying families in building AFFORDABLE and energy-efficient straw bale homes, and we are TRAINING young emerging professionals to build LOW CARBON MODERN NATURAL BUILDINGS. We are a nonprofit that provides assistance during all stages of the build. Before breaking ground we act as a free consultant for interested families, by connecting them with low interest rate loans and supplying architectural plans free of cost. During the build we manage the build process and budget, and we provide a labor force of unpaid volunteer interns. After construction is complete we provide our families continued education in home maintenance and repair.

With this program we build affordable housing for the community and provide valuable EDUCATION AND SKILLS IN NATURAL BUILDING to every person involved: homeowners, interns, CR staff and volunteers. Our interns participate from foundation-to-finish working under the direction of our expert natural building instructors. And...we are the only organization that offers this type of education free of cost.
