Resources across our destinations vary, and classes are often overcrowded. Your help is much appreciated, especially when it comes to giving students vital individual attention to support their studies.
You don't have to be a teacher to volunteer at New Life Academy and there is no need to have a TEFL qualification to gain work experience. Furthermore, you don't even need to speak the local language. this volunteer programme is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year or at university or wanting a career break. All we require is a good standard of spoken English. No Prior Teaching Experience Required
Anyone over the age of 17 can get involved teaching English in India. No qualifications are required but it’s important that you are enthusiastic about the work. As long as you speak English and have a real desire to help the children improve, you will be well-suited to the project.
You can make a huge difference by helping Indian children improve their conversational English skills. They have a real desire to learn English, the language that can put them in touch with the rest of the world and help them to gain employment.
What subjects can I teach?
- Teaching English: One of our most popular projects is Teaching English, where you will work to improve students’ written and verbal language skills through educational activities, lessons and fun games.
- Teaching IT: Basic technological know-how is a vital skill in today’s world! By teaching IT skills to students, you will make a great difference to their chance of future success.
- Teaching Music: Volunteers with musical talents have the opportunity to teach children in disadvantaged communities to play various musical instruments.
Despite the fact that you will find English speakers throughout India, the standard of conversational English teaching in public schools is usually very poor. The students may know about English literature and are better at grammar than most native-speakers, but they find it hard to make themselves understood. This means they lack the confidence to speak English, missing out on the jobs that will go to those who can afford a private education.
You can be part of the solution to this problem. Whether you are coming to volunteer during your gap year, career break or an extended holiday, you will have a valuable role to play.
Volunteers generally find that teaching practices in India have remained the same for years. The children usually learn by rote and through copying out sections of text. By contrast, our volunteers sing songs, play games and generally make the lessons more interesting. You will be able to bring the subject alive and you will witness the children growing in confidence and ability.
The impact you have on the lives of your students will be long-lasting. Added to this, you will be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the wider community.
There are also opportunities to teach mathematics, science and physical education. You can even teach other languages,
- Teaching / Instruction
- English as a Secondary Language (ESL)
- Computer Science
- Environmental Science
