ORGANIZATION: DIBS FOR KIDS

  • 29 people are interested

Our small team at DIBS (Delivering Infinite Book Shelves) recently pushed out our first-ever blog, which we hope will become a popular and helpful educational resource about childhood education and literacy. To make this as sustainable as possible, we are looking for volunteer writers that have writing and blog experience and want to help us maintain the site, grow our followers, increase engagement and ultimately increase our donor and volunteer pool so that more students have the opportunity to take a book they love home every single school night.

For those interested (college students, retirees, previous teachers, parents, someone looking to do more with their skills and time) we will help you learn more about literacy and education, create thought-provoking blog posts, hone your writing skills, and give you a space to share your perspective on reading and educational issues.

Mission Statement

Working with schools and programs to ensure Kindergarten through 3rd grade students have the opportunity to take a good book home, every night, for fun.

Description

DIBS, or Delivering Infinite Book Shelves for Kids is working with public schools to provide an opportunity for every child to read a book at home every night regardless of income level. The program stems from our founder’s experience as a Teach For America 1st grade teacher in New Orleans, where he learned first-hand how difficult it was as a teacher to guide his students through their lessons when so many were unequipped to read and comprehend the material.

Over 60 percent of students growing up in poverty do not have access to a single age-appropriate book in their home according to the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. Teachers need a hands-off way to face this issue head-on, a program that empowers young students to read outside of school without teacher guidance, and encourages their parents and guardians to play a more active role in their reading development.

We fundraise to bring leveled books, bins and our QR-code, book-scanning technology into high-poverty K-3rd grade classrooms so students can check a book out every single school day. With DIBS, each student takes home almost 100 books per school year.

We currently serve over 1,000 students across five elementary schools in Omaha, as well as classrooms in Kansas City and New Orleans. Since the program began in 2012, students have taken home over 220,000 books.
