ORGANIZATION: The Children's Initiative

AARP Experience Corps volunteers, age 50 and over, are neededto help struggling readers in grades K-3 during the after school programs of local elementary schools. The goal is to guide these young students to become great readers by the end of the third grade. In fourth grade they will be expected to switch from learning to read...to reading to learn. Only 28% of California's fourth graders are proficient in reading. Studies show that fourth grade students who are not reading at grade level are four times more likely to not graduate from high school. This risk multiplies for students from low-income backgrounds. There is a crucial need to provide additional, targeted literacy support to the most at risk students in Kindergarten through third grade.

Volunteers provide students the time, attention and extra practice needed to strenghten their literacy skills. Tutors are asked to commit to a whole school year, twice a week, for about two hours each session. Tutors will work with the same students each time, thus building intergenerational connections and mentioring relationships. These connections are key in the the academic and social growth of each student. (Substitute tutors are also needed to help fill in for the regular volunteers when they are sick or on vacation.)

Comprehensive pre-service training, ongoing support, curriculum, and educational resources will be provided. Experience Corps San Diego is working with all six elementary schools in Lemon Grove as well as a school in City Heights and a school in Normal Heights. Mission Statement

We are dedicated to assisting children, youth and families reach their full potential by working for integrated service delivery systems that promote the values of collaboration and prevention, and for measurable outcomes in the fields of health, education, safety and economic security.

Description

The Children's Initiative was established in 1992, by five local San Diego foundations and more than 40 community and public leaders, to serve as an advocate and custodian for effective policies, programs and services that support the health and well-being of children, youth and families in San Diego County. Over the past decade the Board of Directors and staff have designed and administered numerous projects and programs supporting the health and well-being of children and youth, convened thousands of community stakeholders and parents to serve as advocates on children's issues, brokered lasting relationships in support of youth serving programs and leveraged a broad array of resources - all on behalf of San Diego's children and youth and their families.

The impact of The Children's Initiative's work is demonstrated by the quality of programs and policies in place today, the unmet community needs being addressed and by the respected reputation our organization has built.
