The Charleston Chapter of NEWBORNS IN NEED is holding a community drive to collect warm sleepers and sleep sacks (sizes NB to 18 months) for needy babies in the Lowcountry. All items collected will be distributed right here in Charleston and the surrounding communities.
This is a great activity for businesses, youth groups, church groups or anyone interested in helping needy babies in our area. Simply purchase new sleepers (Size NB to 18 months) and turn them in at one of the collection points below during the months of September or October. Even ONE sleeper can make a difference!
The winter months can cause hardships for babies who do not have cold weather clothing. Babies are at risk when loose blankets are placed inside the crib for warmth. They can burrow into comforters and blankets which can cause suffocation or which can deprive them of fresh air -- a suspected cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Babies should have sleepers or sleep sacks to keep them warm throughout the winter months. Can you please help?
Starting September 1, donations may be dropped off during business hours at:
1) Bees Ferry West Ashley Library, 3035 Sanders Rd., West Ashley
2) St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 E. Montague, N. Charleston (Weekdays, 9a-2pm)

Description
Newborns in Need makes and donates baby gowns, blankets, and other essential baby items to hospitals and other agencies that provide for premature and newborn infants. Our Charleston chapter donates to MUSC Children's Care Clinic, Fetter Healthcare Network, Florence Crittenton, Lowcountry Crisis Pregnancy Center (Charleston & Orangeburg), Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Mt. Pleasant Roper Hospital, MUSC NICU, New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC, Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Center, Roper St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley, and Summerville Medical Center. Many of the babies we are helping come from below the poverty line and do not have adequate clothing or blankets. Each year thousands of babies are admitted for care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in hospitals. Due to the extremely small sizes of these babies, there is a shortage of hospital gowns, t-shirts and sleepers tiny enough for them to wear. Many of these babies will go home in nothing more than a disposable diaper, those that have a home to go to. It's unfortunate, but sadly true, that some of these precious children will lose their struggle for life and need only one outfit and blanket to be snuggled in. Our volunteers also make bereavement items.
