Pairing At-Risk Youth with Homeless Dogs!

We're launching a new program at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall in San Jose, and we need CHAUFFEURS on THURSDAYS from 2:30pm-6:00pm.

UnChained pairs homeless dogs with at-risk youth: the youth learn positive communication and teamwork through teaching the dogs good manners, social skills and basic commands! This training increases the dogs' chances of finding a forever home--dogs with basic skills are 50% more likely to be adopted--while it strengthens the youth's capacity for compassion, responsibility, creativity and bonding. Everyone wins!

GET INVOLVED: If you're interested in volunteering with us, we would love to hear from you! Please fill our our Volunteer Application at: http://www.livingunchained.org/volunteer.htm

CHAUFFEUR ROLE: Our chauffeurs will transport 3 pups from their foster homes to Juvenile Hall, where dogs will be trained by the youth. If you have some knowledge dog training, handling or behavior, and enjoy the open road...then this is a great role for you! Chauffeurs often attend class to lend a hand holding leashes and filling water bowls during class as well. Volunteers who attend class should prepare to enter the facility with an open mind, to withhold judgements and to be sensitive to maintaining confidentiality of the youth they encounter.

TIME COMMITMENT: Chauffeurs transport pups one class day per week, and spend approximately 4 hours volunteering on those days, including 1.5 hours of class. Classes run on an 8 week cycle, and we ask volunteers to commit to 6 months of volunteering.

OTHER: Chauffeur volunteers will need to be able to pass a background check in order to enter the Juvenile Hall facility. This may include fingerprinting or providing additional information such as your birthdate and driver's license number.

Description

UnChained uses the Canines Teaching Compassion program, an Animal Assisted Therapy (ATT) program, to help to change the lives of kids and save the lives of dogs by matching at-risk youth and shelter dogs together! The youth learn positive communication and interaction with one another through teaching the dogs good manners, social skills and basic commands This training increases the dogs' chances of becoming adopted, while it teaches the youth impulsivity-control, mastery of a skill, future orientation and the value of restorative justice.
